The End Is Near For Game Of Thrones‘ But David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Are Ready For What’s Next
Over the course of Game of Thrones, the series has had plenty of controversial scenes. Especially for television. Most of that comes from the source material by George R.R. Martin, however, a lot of those scenes were turned up to eleven thanks to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Now it seems the two writers/producers are set to one up themselves in the controversial department, just with the premise of their new show.
No, it’s not one of those Game of Thrones spinoffs. According to Variety, Weiss and Benioff’s next series has already been greenlit by HBO and it’s a modern day Civil War story called Confederate. Apparently, in this alternate reality, the South won the first Civil War and slavery still exists in this modern age as the Un-United States prepares to fight in the Third American Civil War. No doubt the premise will rustle some jimmies.
Here’s how Variety described the show:
“Confederate chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone – freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.”
In the current political climate, this work of fiction might trigger a few people. Then again Amazon has seen success from The Man In The High Castle. The only side effect I’ve seen from that Nazi controlled America show is it seems easier to call someone a Nazi these days.
Just get ready for this flag to be seen a lot more. After all the ruckus the past few years pulling this flag down from government institutions. Now, HBO will likely be selling merchandise featuring the symbol. Furthermore, I’m sure no person will have an issue with two Jewish white guys writing a show about modern day slavery in America. No way does that happen. (That’s Sarcasm…)
Confederate is set to begin production after the final season of Game of Thrones.
I’ll be tuning in. Will you? Let us know in the comments below.
